“I think radiologists should be the ones driving AI in the healthcare system, and I do think that they need to have a seat at the table,” Joshi said. Radiologists know what sort of tedious tasks in radiology could be done with artificial intelligence, and can augment what we can do in the amount of time that we have to interpret a study.”

“Radiology has always been marked by these sort of watershed moments, and we’ve always felt in an environment that informatics and AI specifically are really the next frontier. In my mind, there’s no doubt that AI is going to be a critical tool in how we practice radiology.”
Avi Sharma, MD, Director of AI at Jefferson Einstein Health, underscores the importance of radiologists taking an active role in AI deployment:
“I’m a little biased, but I would say that radiology is one of the more technologically advanced subspecialties within medicine. And since we’ve done AI for quite a bit now, and it’s been a part of our field for quite a while, there’s a lot of lessons to be learned and shared with our colleagues. So, when I think about leadership and expanding AI across the hospital, I do think that radiologists should be in the driver’s seat — or at least one of the drivers when it comes to incorporating AI— because we understand that there is a lot of potential mishaps and hurdles that need to be crossed before it’s appropriately integrated.”
Radiologists’ experience with AI positions them as valuable contributors to enterprise-wide AI strategies. They can help address key concerns such as data security, workflow integration and regulatory compliance, all of which are critical to AI’s successful adoption.
AI adoption in radiology is accelerating, with estimates suggesting that the global AI in medical imaging market will reach $10 billion by 2030. However, successful implementation requires more than just technology. It requires leadership and effective change management. Radiologists, with their deep domain expertise and experience with AI-driven tools, are best equipped to guide healthcare organizations through this transformation.
