Each September marks Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month, which was established by the Brain Aneurysm Foundation to raise awareness about brain aneurysms and the impact they have on families and communities. The goal of the month is to educate the public about risk factors, symptoms, and treatment options associated with brain aneurysms in order to save lives.
Brain aneurysms occur when a weak spot in the wall of a brain artery bulges or balloons out, potentially leading to a rupture that can cause a hemorrhagic stroke – a life-threatening emergency. Through various activities, including educational campaigns and fundraising events, Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month encourages collaboration with medical professionals to improve understanding and prevention.
An estimated 6.8 million people in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm, or one in 50 people. A brain aneurysm ruptures every 18 minutes. Treatment depends on the aneurysm’s location, size and whether it has ruptured, as well as the patient’s needs.
Unruptured brain aneurysms are often asymptomatic and found incidentally during imaging tests performed for other reasons. Using AI to triage brain aneurysms on CTA scans can help neurointerventionalists, radiologists and care teams identify incidental brain aneurysms and ensure appropriate continuation of long-term care.
Aidoc’s Brain Aneurysm Solution is designed to follow the patient journey from initial finding of a brain aneurysm to treatment or long-term image-based follow-up. Aidoc delivers an image based triage and prioritization AI algorithm run on CTA scans for finding suspected brain aneurysms. For unruptured brain aneurysm findings, Aidoc’s Patient Management Solution uses text-based AI insights to mine radiology reports, searching for confirmed aneurysm findings. For each confirmed finding, we review EHR data, assess risk by analyzing relevant clinical factors and facilitate patient follow-up. An actionable aneurysm follow-up dashboard allows reminder notifications to be sent to nurses and schedulers in specialty aneurysm clinics, prompting connection with primary care providers or patients directly to schedule office visits effortlessly.
This provides a safety net, making sure patients who need follow-up for incidental brain aneurysms are identified, captured and followed.
Brain aneurysms are treatable, which is why identifying an aneurysm before rupture is critical. With research and appropriate scanning, we can all get a step closer to preventing ruptures, disability and death.
Aidoc is partnering with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation for Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month to raise awareness of early detection and support its ongoing initiatives to advocate for advancements in standards.
The Brain Aneurysm Foundation is a globally recognized leader in brain aneurysm awareness, education, support, advocacy and research funding. Established in 1994, the foundation today has a Medical Advisory Board made up of dozens of the world’s foremost aneurysm experts — neurologists, neurosurgeons, interventional neuroradiologists and other brain aneurysm specialists — from leading institutions around the globe.
Over the past decade, the Foundation has provided millions of dollars in grants to academic researchers working to develop promising and potentially life-saving innovations for brain aneurysm treatment and prevention.
We are excited to collaborate with the Foundation to help ensure better patient outcomes – both in September and year round.
