The Role of AI in Pulmonary Embolism Diagnosis

Aidoc recently launched the first AI-based automated activation solution that facilitates rapid risk assessment and care coordination for intermediate to high and high-risk pulmonary embolism (PE) patients. Developed as part of an ongoing partnership between Aidoc and Yale University’s radiology and PE intervention teams, our PE Care Coordination solution is driven by the FDA-cleared PE triage and notification AI solution and an RV/LV ratio algorithm to form a communication solution that enables multidisciplinary collaboration for patient diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary embolism. The launch of the PE Care Coordination solution expands AI into a role where it not just analyzes medical images but enables care teams to coordinate an entire treatment workflow that involves many different physicians.

Furthering our commitment to be the health system’s enterprise AI partner, this new solution enables the possibility of easy collaboration, shorter time to treatment, shorter length of stay, increased appropriate intervention opportunities, and higher physician and patient satisfaction.

What impact does a workflow coordination tool have on pulmonary embolism (PE) diagnosis?

Acute pulmonary embolism is the third most common cause of death from cardiovascular disease after heart attack and stroke. Often called the “silent killer,” untreated PE has a mortality rate as high as 30%. In fact, it is estimated that over 50% of patients who ultimately died as a result of a pulmonary embolism were not diagnosed with PE before death.

The importance of rapid diagnosis and treatment cannot be understated. According to this study, when accurately cared for, PE mortality drops to 8%. There has recently been significant growth in the PE intervention space, stressing the importance of quick, comprehensive, and standardized PE care. Massachusetts General Hospital created the first-ever pulmonary embolism response team (PERT) in 2012; Mass General also facilitated the creation of the PERT Consortium, an organization that seeks to spread awareness of and standardize PE care. While more hospitals and health systems are joining the Consortium every year, standardized PE intervention is only beginning to enter the mainstream.

Our PE Care Coordination solution was released with the growth and standardization of PE care in mind. As more institutions adopt PE treatment protocols, our solution that combines automatic AI-based notification with a multidisciplinary communication tool enables hospitals and other healthcare providers to build out their standardized PE treatment strategies and remain on the cutting edge of patient care.

With a condition as complicated as acute pulmonary embolism, physicians need as much time as possible to focus their attention on delivering quality patient care without having to worry about logistics. Our solution shortens time to PERT activation by automatically notifying relevant team members of an intermediate to high-risk PE. By using an automatic and standardized AI-driven process, Aidoc’s PE Care Coordination solution ensures the right patient is treated at the right hospital, optimizing catchment areas and interventional treatment opportunities.

The solution also empowers physicians in their native work environments by providing them with access to their preferred environment, whether it’s an app on their mobile phone or workstation, allowing results at the tips of each specialists’ fingers, leveraging Aidoc’s vendor-agnostic approach to workflows.

An Enterprise Approach to AI

The launch of our PE Care Coordination solution demonstrates our commitment to being the health system’s enterprise AI partner.

As artificial intelligence becomes a standard of care in medical imaging, it will be more important than ever for small and large institutions alike to have an enterprise AI strategy that can solve a mass of critical issues. Benefits of having a unified AI strategy include the ability to activate new solutions with the click of a mouse, working directly with a single vendor across imaging modalities and medical pathologies, and tailored solutions that fit unique needs.

Aidoc is the enterprise AI partner in the medical imaging world – it’s our promise to our employees, partners, investors, and the market as a whole. We’ve more than doubled our R&D budget in the past few months to keep the development velocity required for the fast-paced radiology AI industry. With our new PE Care Coordination tool, we are furthering our commitment to enterprise AI and enabling radiologists and other physicians to focus on what matters most – quality patient treatment – and leaving the messy details to AI.
