Avi Sharma, MD, joined the CIO Podcast, hosted by Healthcare IT Today to discuss how the Philadelphia-area health system leverages Aidoc’s solutions and champions AI adoption
On a recent episode of the CIO podcast hosted by Healthcare IT Today, Avi Sharma, MD, CIIP, Director of AI at Jefferson Einstein Hospitals discussed how healthcare system leaders can overcome resistance to become AI champions in their organization.
Dr. Sharma shared how the Philadelphia-area health system employs a strategic approach, leveraging data-driven success stories. He noted how the strategy created a positive feedback loop that encourages more radiologists to adopt AI solutions.
“With enough encouragement, nurturing and data you can prove that it’s worth the change in their workflow,” Dr. Sharma said.
“Clinicians are very data-driven people. Our lives were spent over a decade in education and learning the numbers and learning the facts. So, for me, it’s about providing the data in real-life applications to determine what the impact was pre-AI and post-AI,” he added.
Dr. Sharma told podcast host John Lynn that with so many vendors getting into the AI space, Jefferson Einstein’s collaborative partnership with Aidoc has been instrumental.
“It has been a very mutually beneficial relationship because we feel like we invested in nurturing the appropriate AI to help our fellow colleagues, because you’re co-developing solutions that end up making it globally. That constructive process is what eventually transitioned [Aidoc’s] mission not just to be a point-solution vendor but rather an enterprise platform,” he said.
“They’re not just helping radiologists, but now they’re attempting to help other sub-specialties and making an impact there. Seeing that growth and evolution in the company—it’s a warm welcome feeling to know that you’re making an impact.”
In part of a recent conversation series with Aidoc, Dr. Sharma said “the best time to have started using AI was yesterday.” He added the impact of AI-powered opportunistic screening, particularly in detecting cardiovascular disease risk factors early and enabling proactive patient management. He noted how the interventional radiology team at Jefferson Einstein benefited from AI-driven care coordination, reducing time to intervention for critical conditions like pulmonary embolism.
