Top 3 Things We're Looking Forward to at RSNA 2024

The RSNA meeting has always been an annual highlight in radiology and healthcare technology as a whole, but RSNA 2024 is shaping up to be something especially transformative. Beyond showcasing the latest innovations in radiology AI, this year’s event promises to reveal new directions in patient care and technological integration, bringing together some of the brightest minds in the industry.

Here are three key themes I am particularly excited about:

1. A Focus on Foundation Models: The Path to a Smarter Algorithm Ecosystem

One of the most anticipated conversations at RSNA 2024 will focus on foundation models and their potential to significantly expand the scope of radiology AI. Historically, developing algorithms one by one has required substantial time and resources, making it challenging to deliver a high volume of high-quality models quickly. Foundation models, however, have the potential to significantly accelerate AI development, reducing time and resources by up to tenfold. At Aidoc, we’re especially excited at the idea of pairing this technology with our proprietary aiOS™, as orchestration will become increasingly essential for managing the deployment of these next-generation models across all imaging.

But there’s still a hurdle: regulatory processes. Even if we streamline development, each model must go through rigorous approval channels, often individually. Foundation models could potentially see more streamlined regulatory pathways emerge, where, ideally, a set of 30 algorithms could be reviewed and approved in one go, driving down cost and expanding what’s possible.

The end goal? In an ideal world: a CT scanner running a hundred algorithms at once, where each one meaningfully contributes to the diagnostic workflow.

2. Beyond Radiology: The RSNA Stage Expands

RSNA might be known as the premier radiology conference, but it’s become so much more. Increasingly, this event is attracting stakeholders from across healthcare–C-suite executives, IT leaders and interdisciplinary care teams who see RSNA as a place to talk about the entire imaging patient journey, not just radiology in isolation. This year, we’re eager to see how this trend evolves as more vendors shift focus from standalone algorithms to holistic AI solutions that bridge radiology with other departments, like the emergency department, to acute and sub-acute care teams.

The idea is, essentially, that the industry is reimagining many aspects of the full imaging workflow. I believe conversations this year will emphasize the role that Radiologists play in transforming imaging workflows through the combination of AI plus HI – the Human Intervention (a phrase quoted by Dr. McKinney and the team from the University of Miami). Together, radiologists are achieving unprecedented benefits from bringing AI technology into their daily routines.

3. Radiologists Will (and Should) Look Beyond Algorithms

The shopping-list mentality–where radiologists come to RSNA with a checklist of individual AI algorithms–is gradually being replaced by a focus on comprehensive workflow solutions. For AI to maximize its impact, radiologists need to look at how these tools fit into the broader clinical workflow, connecting the dots between radiology and other departments.

Take, for instance, how some outpatient facilities use AI alerts to manage potential PE cases. When AI flags a possible PE, the outpatient facility can immediately involve radiology, which determines severity, and–if needed–escalates the case to ED or inpatient care. This proactive workflow saves lives by bypassing traditional, segmented pathways. We’re also seeing interventional radiologists reach out directly to ED in certain cases, bypassing layers of communication to make patient management faster and more efficient.

At RSNA 2024, we expect even more emphasis on AI that bridges radiology with other critical departments, showing just how interconnected and essential these tools have become for modern care delivery.

What’s Next?

As we head into RSNA 2024, the excitement around these developments is palpable. Whether it’s the promise of foundation models to streamline algorithm development, the expansion of RSNA as a cross-disciplinary forum or the push for more integrated workflows, this year’s event is likely to shape key conversations we’re having about AI in radiology. We’re eager to see these ideas in action and to share insights with industry leaders who are equally passionate about transforming radiology and beyond. Here’s to another inspiring, forward-looking RSNA.
